A Refuge for Victims of Domestic Violence

What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is violence or other abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting, such as in marriage or cohabitation. It may be termed intimate partner violence when committed by a spouse or partner in an intimate relationship against the other and can take place in heterosexual or same-sex relationships, or between former spouses or partners.

Domestic violence can also involve violence against children, parents, or the elderly. It takes on many forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, and sexual.

Sexual abuse can range from subtle, coercive forms to marital rape and violent physical abuse such as choking, beating, female genital mutilation, and acid throwing that results in disfigurement or death. Domestic murders include stoning, bride burning, honor killings, and dowry deaths.

Humble Beginnings

Viola’s Place Inc was established in 2018 as a New Jersey-based, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in memory of Viola L. White. Ms.White was a pillar in her community in Philadelphia for several years. She would house women and give back to her community as much as she could until her death in 1993. Ms. White’s daughter Darlene Keith-Battle kept her legacy alive by becoming a foster and adoptive parent and feeding the homeless in Camden NJ.  This was her way of paying it forward.

Today, Darlene Keith-Battle BA/ MPA serves as the Founder and Executive Director of Viola's Place Inc..  Viola's Place Inc. will serve female clients in need of safe housing,  life skills training and empowerment.
